Thomas Carlton

Back to the Early History Profiles index

Decision

Supplemental early settler; household continuity supported, family unresolved. The 1830 Thomas County household list and the 1840 Lowndes census transcription each name Thomas Carlton in territory associated with future Brooks County. The 1840 transcription reports a household of six males and five females.

Identity controls

Thomas must remain separate from John Carlton, Rev. Peter Carlton, Hardy Carlton, William Carlton, and the other Carlton household heads in Thomas and Lowndes counties. No deed, probate, marriage, or parent-naming record reviewed identifies Thomas's wife or children.

The James Hendry family material identifies Lydia Carlton as a daughter of Judge John Carlton, not Thomas Carlton. Thomas therefore receives no Hendry family bridge on surname evidence alone.

Geography

The 1830 Thomas and 1840 Lowndes placements support a regional household trail, but the original schedule rows and an exact land locator are still needed before assigning one continuous identity or a specific future-Brooks tract.

Barney relevance

Broader future-Brooks context; no direct Barney influence proved.

Remaining work

Inspect both census schedules; search Thomas/Lowndes deeds, taxes, marriage, and probate records; distinguish every same-name or same-generation Carlton before reconstructing a family.
