Melus or Milus Thigpen
Back to the Early History Profiles index
Evidence assessment
Supplemental early settler, original-record verified in Lowndes County by 1826; future-Brooks church placement strong. The traditional 1826 arrival date should be stated as presence by 1826, not arrival in that year.
Evidence
The earliest inspected original is the June 16, 1826 deed from Miles or Milus Thigpen to John Hendry for 200 acres in District 12, Land Lot 515. Simpson and Simeon Strickland witnessed the conveyance, and Simpson proved it in 1837. The surviving copy supports the spelling Milus; later sources also use Melus.
An Ancestry census search locates Milus Thigpen in Captain Hutchinson's District, Warren County, Georgia, in 1820 and Melus Thigpen in Lowndes County in 1830. A later published transcription counts one male and five females in the 1830 household. The 1820-to-1830 migration is coherent, but the original census images were not reinspected in this cohort.
Folks Huxford's church reconstruction places Thigpen as a minister at Union by August 12, 1826, an organizing member of Bethel Primitive Baptist Church, and ordained in 1828. It identifies Sarah Whaley as his wife, reports seven children, and gives his death as January 1839. These are strong secondary claims; the original church minutes, probate, and named child list were not located online.
Family and identity controls
- Sarah Whaley as wife: secondary-supported.
- Seven reported children: secondary-supported as a group, not reconstructed individually here.
- The 1820 Warren and 1830 Lowndes households: strong-probable continuity based on name, chronology, and migration; original image comparison remains needed.
- Later Thigpen families must not be attached to this household from surname alone.
Barney relevance
The 1826 land transaction and Bethel/Union church accounts place Thigpen in the early future-Brooks institutional corridor. No direct Barney-townsite residence or descendant chain was proved.
Remaining targets
Inspect the 1820 and 1830 census images, Bethel and Union minutes, marriage evidence for Sarah Whaley, probate or administration around 1839, and land-title records for Lot 515.
