Joseph Kinsley and John Kinsey

Back to the Early History Profiles index

Conclusion

Roster status: Joseph Kinsley remains a traditional/unresolved candidate. John Kinsey is independently documented in the future-Brooks regional record by 1829. They cannot be merged safely.

Barney relevance: broader future-Brooks context for John Kinsey; none proved for Joseph Kinsley.

Evidence

Huxford's retrospective arrival roster names Joseph Kinsley among the people who came in 1828. In a separate officer table, Huxford identifies John Kinsey as second lieutenant of the 659th District on November 11, 1829. The given names and surname spellings differ.

A Lowndes deed extract supplies an independent John Kinsey record: Isham Walker of Ware County conveyed District 15, Lot 125 to John Kinsey of Lowndes County on December 28, 1829; the instrument was recorded in 1841 in Deed Book C, page 163. The transaction corroborates John, not Joseph. It does not establish that the two names referred to one person.

A second deed-index locator records John Kinsey conveying the same District 15, Lot 125 to Thomas Newborn on August 4, 1830 (Brooks Deed Book B, page 17; recorded April 18, 1862). The paired purchase and disposal locators form a coherent indexed chain and place John's land in territory that became Brooks County. The underlying deeds remain uninspected, so this is locator-anchored geography, not original-image verification.

Identity and Barney bridge test

No spouse, children, census household, probate record, or later signed instrument has been securely assigned to Joseph Kinsley. No Kinsey/Kinsley household appears in the 1900 Barney roster. John Kinsey therefore qualifies independently as a regional official and landholder, while Joseph remains a possibly corrupted roster name.
