Jeremiah Wilson Sr.
Back to the Early History Profiles index
Evidence assessment
Supplemental early settler, strongly anchored on future-Brooks land and later verified as Brooks County's first surveyor. His reported 1831 arrival and older parentage remain secondary-supported.
Evidence
A deed extraction records Jeremiah Wilson Sr. conveying 300 acres in District 12, Lot 431 to “Jeremiah Wilson Jr., his son” on February 3, 1849. The extraction explicitly names their relationship; the original deed remains uninspected. Another extraction records Jeremiah Wilson conveying District 12, Lot 355 to Israel Folsom in 1846.
Huxford's family account identifies Jeremiah as a son of Capt. James Wilson, husband of Elizabeth “Bettie” Lucas, and father of seven named children. It places the family in Lowndes County about 1831 and their home about four miles northwest of Quitman. Those family details remain secondary-supported. The father–son relationship with Jeremiah Jr. is explicitly stated in the deed extraction, but still awaits confirmation from the original.
County-history extracts and court material identify Jeremiah as a surveyor. The Brooks Inferior Court paid him $136.50 on May 3, 1859, for surveying and laying out Quitman. That work is verified as a public act, but it postdates the antebellum settlement anchor.
Identity and family controls
- Jeremiah Wilson Jr. as Jeremiah Sr.'s son: explicitly named in a deed extraction; original confirmation pending.
- Elizabeth Lucas as wife and Capt. James Wilson as father: secondary-supported.
- Margaret Louise, Eliza Ann, Emily Jane, Mary Ann, Sarah Ellen, and Silas: secondary-supported children.
- Jeremiah Sr. must be kept separate from his son in census, deed, and office records.
Barney relevance
Lots 355 and 431 and the reported home northwest of Quitman establish a future-Brooks connection. No record proves residence at the later Barney townsite.
