Jane Bryan Hunter¶
Jane Bryan Hunter connects two early future-Brooks families. Federal census records document her as Abraham Hunter Jr.'s wife, while her 1912 obituary names John Bryan as her father and identifies Okapilco as her birthplace and her father's home.
Marriage and household¶
The 1850 census places Abram Hunter, age forty-four, and Jane, age nineteen, together in Lowndes County. The 1860 Brooks County census records Abraham and Jane as a continuing married couple. In 1880, Jane appears as Abraham's wife, with John M. and Virgil C. identified as sons in the household.
Those records verify Jane as Abraham Hunter Jr.'s wife. Theophilus W. Hunter's 1919 death certificate independently names his parents as Abraham Hunter and Jane Bryant.
Bryan or Bryant parentage¶
Jane's 1912 obituary identifies John Bryan as her father and says that she was born at Okapilco, described as her father's home. The obituary, household chronology, and later death certificate make Jane a strong-probable daughter of John Bryan.
The relationship is not graded verified because no inspected birth record, family Bible, probate file, or deed states it. The Bryan/Bryant spelling variation is historically common but must not be used to merge John with the unresolved Jose, Joe, or Joseph candidates.
Connection to future Brooks County¶
Jane's reported Okapilco birth, her documented marriage household, and her later Brooks County life give her a direct personal connection to the settlement region. She also carries the documented Hunter line forward through children including Theophilus W. Hunter, who became a Quitman physician and later supported the South Georgia Railroad.
