Evidence assessment

Traditional early-settler candidate; regional residence verified, future-Brooks residence secondary-supported but unresolved.

The original 1830 household predates Huxford's 1834 arrival date. The safest reading is that Elias was a regional resident by 1830; the later date may describe a move into a narrower locality or may be inaccurate.

An original 1830 Thomas County census schedule contains a household headed by Elias Robert; Ancestry indexes the surname as Roberts. An 1840 index and preserved schedule image place Elias Roberts in Swaines, Thomas County. These records verify a Thomas County household sequence, not residence within the territory that became Brooks County.

The strongest future-Brooks claim is retrospective. Huxford wrote that Elias arrived in 1834 and that his son Hezekiah Roberts was born in the Tallokas district of old Lowndes County in 1840. If accurate, the Tallokas birthplace would place the family in territory later included in Brooks County. No birth, baptism, deed, tax page, or other contemporary record inspected in this pass independently confirms that statement.

Elias should remain on the traditional/candidate roster rather than the verified supplemental roster until an original record bridges the Thomas County household to Tallokas or another future-Brooks location.

Identity and census trail

1830 Thomas County

The original schedule at stamped page 27 names Elias Robert. The literal reading is verified; adding the final s is an indexed normalization. Household demographic marks were not accepted as a reconstructed family because they have not received the required header-aligned transcription and independent reread.

This is the earliest inspected record attributable to the candidate. It conflicts with a literal reading of Huxford's claim that Elias “came” in 1834 unless that date meant movement into the future-Brooks portion rather than arrival in the broader region.

1840 Thomas County

Ancestry locates Elias Roberts in Swaines, Thomas County, manuscript page 323, and the original schedule image is preserved. The name/index locator is usable; a complete demographic transcription remains pending. Swaines is not, by itself, proof of Tallokas or future-Brooks residence.

1850 Thomas County namesakes

The original District 81 frame contains two separate entries rendered Eleas Roberts: a younger man about 28 and an older man about 60. The older man is chronologically compatible with the 1830 household head, but the shared page and age alone do not establish continuity. The younger man could be a son, another relative, or unrelated. Neither household may be merged with the pioneer without distinguishing evidence.

Family claims

Hezekiah Roberts

Huxford explicitly called Hezekiah a son of Elias and said Hezekiah was born in Tallokas in 1840. This is secondary-supported, not original-record verified. No inspected census relationship, death certificate, probate record, family Bible, or deed names Elias as Hezekiah's father.

Other possible household members

Earlier audit work identified Elizabeth E. and Sherrod E. Roberts as possible household or family candidates. No inspected record in this pass establishes their relationship to Elias. They remain unresolved and should not appear as children or spouse in public copy.

Elias's wife has not been identified from an inspected original record.

Tax, land, deed, marriage, and probate findings

  • FamilySearch record 6C12-N7SL indexes an Elias Roberts tax assessment in Georgia, but the captured detail supplies no year, county, district, land lot, acreage, or image reading. It proves only that an indexed tax entry exists; it cannot locate this Elias.
  • A Brooks County universal-index OCR pair associates an “Elias Roberts” with a deed recorded in 1921 and an instrument date OCR'd as 1827. The century-scale recording anomaly and unverified handwriting make it unsafe for this identity. It was not used as pioneer evidence.
  • No parent-naming deed, marriage, will, administration, guardianship, cemetery marker, or contemporary newspaper item was located in the accessible stored evidence and bounded online searches for Elias.
  • No inspected land or tax record places Elias in a named future-Brooks district or lot.

Conflict analysis

  1. 1834 arrival versus 1830 census: the original 1830 Thomas County household predates Huxford's arrival date. The 1834 date may refer to movement into a narrower locality, may concern another Elias, or may be inaccurate. It is not independently verified.
  2. Thomas County versus Tallokas: the 1830 and 1840 records are Thomas County records; the Tallokas claim is retrospective. The two claims can coexist only if the family changed residence or the county attribution obscures a boundary-area movement. No inspected record supplies that bridge.
  3. 1850 namesakes: two Elias/Eleas Roberts entries on the same Thomas County frame prevent a safe single-line reconstruction.

Barney and Brooks County relevance

No direct Barney-townsite residence, landholding, church office, road duty, or public role has been proved for Elias. His relevance rests on Huxford's placement of son Hezekiah's 1840 birth in Tallokas and Hezekiah's later prominence in western Brooks/Pavo. That is meaningful local tradition but does not independently establish Elias's own future-Brooks residence.

Public-ready profile copy

Elias Roberts

Elias Roberts belongs on the traditional early-settler research list, but his exact local trail remains unsettled. An original 1830 census schedule records Elias Robert as a Thomas County household head, and an 1840 index places Elias Roberts in Swaines, Thomas County. Huxford later wrote that Elias came to the area in 1834 and that his son Hezekiah was born in the Tallokas district of old Lowndes County in 1840.

The records do not yet form a complete chain. Two Elias or Eleas Roberts entries appear in Thomas County in 1850, and no inspected deed, tax page, probate file, or family record connects either man to Tallokas. Hezekiah's relationship to Elias and his Tallokas birthplace therefore remain secondary-supported rather than original-record verified.

The safest conclusion is that Elias was a documented regional resident by 1830 and a traditional future-Brooks settler candidate. Promotion to the verified supplemental roster requires a contemporary record locating him in Tallokas or elsewhere inside the future Brooks County boundary.

Research coverage and remaining targets

Searched: preserved local research files; the original 1830 and preserved 1840 census images; the original-image review notes for the two 1850 candidates; Huxford's Brooks County history; the FamilySearch tax capture; Brooks deed-index data; and exact-name web queries for Elias and Hezekiah with Thomas, Lowndes, Tallokas, deed, and probate terms.

Remaining decisive targets:

  1. the original tax-digest image behind FamilySearch 6C12-N7SL, with year, county, district, and adjoining taxpayers;
  2. a complete header-aligned transcription and independent reread of the 1830 and 1840 households;
  3. independent reconstruction of both 1850 Elias households;
  4. a deed, tax, road, church, court, or probate record locating Elias in Tallokas or another future-Brooks district;
  5. an original record naming Hezekiah as Elias's son.
