Cornelius English¶
Assessment¶
Cornelius English qualifies as a supplemental early settler. The original 1830 Lowndes County census names his household, and the original 1836 general-militia return places a Cornelius English in the 659th District. The militia record proves district association, not active wartime service.
The 1840 census contains two Cornelius English households, one identified as junior. No inspected deed, probate, tax record, or other original source yet proves how the two men were related or which household belonged to the father of Matthew Joseph English. An 1849 sheriff notice names Cornelius English with Barbary English and Nathan Lindsay but does not state their relationships.

Roster and Barney relevance¶
- Roster: supplemental; original-record anchored by 1830 and 1836.
- Barney relevance: secondary-supported descendant bridge. The later generations are supported by census and parent records, but the Cornelius-to-Matthew link still rests on compiled genealogy.
- Direct Barney residence: none proved for Cornelius.
Descendant bridge to Barney¶
The best-supported reconstruction is:
Cornelius English and Abigail Allbritton → Matthew Joseph English → John Cornelius English → Andrew James English of Barney.
The 1860 Madison County, Florida, census records M. J. English, a 21-year-old Georgia-born planter, with Flora M. English and two-year-old William H. English. A Civil War profile identifies him as Matthew Joseph English, records his marriage to Flora Blanton on February 19, 1857, and reports that he was killed at Sharpsburg on September 17, 1862, while serving in Company D, Fifth Florida Infantry.
After Matthew's death, Flora returned to her Blanton family. The 1870 Taylor County census places Flora and nine-year-old John English in James A. Blanton's household. In 1880, John C. English is explicitly identified as Flora's son. The 1900 census places Flora in John's household with his wife and children, including Andrew J. English. Andrew later became the railroad agent at Barney. His Social Security parent record independently names John C. English and Elizabeth C. Eakins as his parents.
The later chain is well supported, but the first link is not yet verified by an original parent-naming record. Two compiled genealogies identify Matthew as the son of Cornelius English and Abigail Allbritton, and Huxford separately reports Abigail's marriage to Cornelius. No inspected probate, deed, Bible, guardianship, marriage, or estate record names Matthew as their son. The complete bridge is therefore secondary-supported, not fully verified.
The other A. J. English¶
The A. J. English once considered as a possible father of John C. English was Andrew J. English, born about 1835 in Georgia. He remained in Brooks County, lived alone in 1860, and reported himself single in both 1880 and 1900. Those records make him a separate local man and remove him as the leading candidate for Flora Blanton's husband.
