Alexander Campbell
Back to the Early History Profiles index
Evidence assessment
Supplemental early settler, indexed official-record continuity from 1830 to 1850; Morven/future-Brooks placement strong. The reported 1826 or 1827 arrival remains secondary.
Evidence
Prior census audits identify Alexander Campbell as a Lowndes household head in 1830, 1840, and 1850. A fresh Ancestry search confirms an indexed 1850 Lowndes record for an Alexander Campbell born in Scotland around 1777. The original 1850 image was not reinspected in this cohort, so household members and exact ages are not adopted from the index alone.
A contemporary grand-jury presentment, reproduced by the Ray City History Blog, lists Alexander Campbell among the Lowndes jurors. The blog labels the proceeding as May 1833 but reproduces a footer with a conflicting June 12, 1832 date. The list supports local public activity while the exact publication date remains unsettled until the original newspaper page is inspected.
Huxford and later derivative accounts identify Alexander's wife as Flora Morrison, say both came from the Isle of Skye, place the family near Sharpe's Store/Morven after about 1827, and identify Margaret Campbell—wife of Neal Hendry—as a daughter. These details are coherent with the indexed census chain and later Hendry family material. They remain secondary-supported because no inspected marriage, probate, Bible, or deed names the relationships.
Family and identity controls
- Flora Morrison as wife: secondary-supported.
- Margaret Campbell Hendry as daughter: secondary-supported.
- Norman Campbell and other proposed children require their own parent-naming or household bridge.
- The Lowndes household must remain distinct from same-name Campbell families elsewhere.
Barney relevance
Morven and the 1833 county activity place Campbell in the future-Brooks regional network. No residence at the later Barney townsite is proved.
Remaining targets
Inspect the 1830, 1840, and 1850 schedules; original grand-jury publication; immigration/naturalization evidence; Flora's marriage or probate; Alexander's estate; and the Margaret Campbell–Neal Hendry marriage and parentage evidence.
