This section is reserved for later-life child evidence. No later spouse, death, burial, obituary, probate, separate household, or descendant-line identification has been added here yet from direct records.

Connections to Other Barney Families

  • Senith Barnes Strickland is identified as Stephen's first wife in the current trail through FindAGrave, the timing of her death before the 1900 census, and William Strickland's 1944 death certificate, which names his mother as Senith Barnes and father as Stephen Strickland.
  • Della Burnes/Burns Strickland is documented before marriage in the James and Sarah Burns/Barnes household in the 1880 and 1900 censuses, then directly documented by the 1902 Brooks County marriage license/return and the 1910 census; FindAGrave and marker images support the identification as Florence Idella "Della" Burns Strickland, died 17 August 1915, buried at Hopewell Cemetery.
  • Sallie/May Strickland is documented in the 1920 census and Stephen's 1924 death record, but whether Sallie and May are the same person remains unresolved.
  • The 1860 and 1870 censuses place Stephen/Elias with Stephen S./Stephen Smith Strickland and Harriet M. Strickland. Stephen's death certificate supports the father as Steve Strickland, but the mother field reads 'don't know,' so Harriet remains supported by the childhood census trail rather than the death certificate. FindAGrave and derivative online trees identify Harriet as Harriet Mariah McClelland/McClellan Strickland, wife of Stephen Smith Strickland, and give Andrew McClelland and Mary Ann Daniel as her parents; that McClelland parentage should be treated as derivative unless a direct record is found. Stephen Smith Strickland's later marriage to Mary Scarborough is directly documented by a Colquitt County marriage license issued 29 August 1876 and marriage return dated 30 August 1876; this helps explain the later Mary Strickland household without making Mary part of Stephen Elias's maternal line. A Civil War pension index card for Stephen S. Strickland gives service in the 1st Georgia Infantry, application filed 6 September 1890 from Georgia, invalid application no. 905956; this supports the father's later identity trail but is not military evidence for Stephen Elias Strickland.
  • The possible network links to Gornto, Hiers, and Alderman families should remain tentative unless supported by direct kinship records.

Research Notes

  • Senith Barnes Strickland's maiden name, death date, and burial are presently dependent on FindAGrave; a cemetery record, death notice, probate record, or family Bible record would strengthen this part of the entry.
  • Stephen's first marriage to Senith Barnes is still missing a direct marriage record, but William Strickland's 1944 death certificate directly names Stephen Strickland as father and Senith Barnes as mother. A derivative Ancestry compilation also names Stephen Elias Strickland and Seneth Barnes with a marriage year of 1875, but it gives Texas as the marriage state and spouse birthplace, so it should be treated as a lead rather than proof until the underlying source is identified.
  • The transition from Della Burnes to Sallie/May Strickland is not resolved. Della's death, divorce, or later whereabouts need a direct record.
  • Sallie Strickland of the 1920 census and May Strickland named on Stephen's death record may be the same woman, but this needs a marriage record, death record, obituary, or other direct link.
  • Several children and married surnames are based on FindAGrave connections. Ada's marriage to James L. Brown and Bessie's marriage to Claude Alcorn are now directly supported. Lee/Henry Lee has a high-confidence adult trail with a strong Alcorn collateral clue, and Charles/Charley now has a documented Florida trail through the 1935 Florida census, death indexes, obituary index, and cemetery evidence. Ada's later Chapman marriage, Bessie's child-line details, Lee/Henry Lee's direct parent-link proof, and Charles's parent-link proof beyond the 1900 census and derivative memorial links still need direct image review. The remaining child lines should be checked against marriage records, death certificates, obituaries, and later census records.
  • The reviewed tax page for Elias N. Strickland does not show real-estate acreage or value and should not be used as evidence of land ownership.
  • An 1880 agricultural non-population schedule for District 335, Wayne County, Georgia, lists an Elias Strickland with 8 acres of tillable land and 520 acres of woodland. This may be relevant, but it should remain tentative until tied to the same Stephen Elias Strickland by the 1880 population census, deed records, or other connecting evidence.
  • Stephen's burial at Pleasant Grove Cemetery is now supported by his 1924 death certificate. FindAGrave marker evidence also supports the burial and links him to parents Stephen Smith Strickland and Harriet Mariah McClelland Strickland, but those online family links are derivative.

Open Research Questions

  • Resolve the open items flagged in Research Notes above with direct records before expanding this household narrative.

Research Status

  • Status: Strong census, marriage, death-record, cemetery, and collateral child-line trail; not source-exhausted.
  • Strengths: The 1860, 1870, 1900, 1910, and 1920 censuses, the 1902 Brooks County marriage record, and the 1924 Georgia death record give a coherent adult identity and migration path for Stephen Elias Strickland.
  • Remaining cautions: First-marriage proof, Senith's direct death/burial evidence, Della's fate, the Sallie/May identity question, Stephen's maternal identification, and several child-to-adult links still need direct-record support. William, Ada, and Bessie now have direct marriage or parent-link evidence. Edna has a strong census/death/burial trail but still needs the underlying obituary image for the sibling list. Lee/Henry Lee and Charles/Charley now have high-confidence adult trails, but each still needs a direct parent-link record such as a death certificate, obituary text, SS-5, or probate item.
