Family Narrative
William McCloud, also recorded as McLeod, McCleod, McLeaud, and Mcloud, headed household 149 in the 1900 Barney census. The 1900 enumeration gives his birth as July 1871 in Georgia and lists him as a Black farmer renting his farm. His wife was Lula Holsendolph, whose surname appears in later records with several spellings, including Holsondolph and Hosendolph. Their Brooks County marriage record names them as William McLeod and Lula Holsendolph, married on 26 December 1895.
The family can now be followed more securely than the earlier draft suggested. William appears as a child in 1880 in the John and Rose McLeod household in Morven, Brooks County, with siblings Sophie, Adaline, John W., and Mitchell. This is the best current evidence for William's parents and siblings, though the later lives of most siblings have not been traced. William appears as head of household in 1900 and 1910. In 1900, he was enumerated in Barney as William McCloud, age twenty-seven, married five years, a farmer, and a renter. The household included Lula, age twenty-four; children Mattie and Otha; Ed Stewart, listed as cousin; and Allia McLeaud, listed as sister. In 1910, William appears in Morven as William McCleod, age thirty-nine, a farmer on a general farm, with wife Lola and children Mattie L., Elther, Rufus D., Burie R., and Susie B. The spelling changes are substantial, but the ages, family structure, and Brooks County location tie the 1900 and 1910 households together.
Lula was the daughter of W. Holsondolph and Julia A. Holsondolph in the 1880 Groverville, Brooks County census, where she appears as Loula, age six. The same household included Lily, Joe, and Charlie. Later sources give her maiden name as Holsendolph or Hosendolph. A FindAGrave memorial names her parents as Joe Holsendolph and Julia Rhym Holsendolph, but the record trail has not yet resolved whether W. Holsondolph and Joe Holsendolph were the same person or whether the memorial preserves a different name tradition.
After William's death, Lula stayed in Brooks County. In 1920 she was enumerated as Lula McLeod, a widowed farmer renting a farm in Morven, with children Other, Rufus, Susy B., Blumer, John J., and Woodro Wilson. In 1930 she was a widowed farmer in Brooks County with Blinna, Jay, and Woodrow. In 1940 she was in Morven as Lula McCloud with her mother Julia Miller and sons Carl and Woodrow. In 1950 she was listed as the mother in the Quitman household of Susie B. McLeod. The Georgia death index records Lula McCloud's death on 27 December 1959 in Brooks County, certificate number 29373. Her cemetery memorial places her burial at New Macedonia Church Cemetery near Quitman.
William's exact death date has not been found. The safest statement is that he died after the 1910 census and before the 1920 census. A Georgia Death Records index entry for William Mcloud names spouse Lulla Hosendolph and child Mattie Jackson, but the available image trail appears tangled with Mattie's death certificate and does not yet provide a separate death certificate for William.
The child list remains the hardest part of this household because several names shift across records. Mattie L. McCloud / McLeod Jackson appears in the 1900 and 1910 McCloud/McLeod household. She married M. J. Jackson in Brooks County in January 1916. In 1920 she was enumerated as Mattie Jackson, wife of M. J. Jackson, with children Alma and Lawton. Her 1927 death certificate names her father as William McCloud and her mother as Lula Hosendolph, gives her death date as 28 May 1927 in Brooks County, and names tuberculosis of the lungs as the cause of death. Her burial was recorded at Morven on 29 May 1927. Her FindAGrave memorial uses the name Mattie L. McCloud Jackson and places her burial at New Macedonia Church Cemetery. A separate Mattie J. McCloud death-index entry from 1938 has been checked and is a different person; it should not be used for this household.
Otha / Elther / Other McCloud-McLeod appears as Otha in 1900, Elther or a similar spelling in 1910, and Other in 1920. The age sequence and placement in Lula's household make these likely the same son, but no later confirmed record has been tied to him. Rufus D. appears in 1910 and 1920. Burie R. appears in 1910, with no later confirmed match. Susie B. appears in 1910 and 1920, and Lula appears in Susie B. McLeod's Quitman household in 1950, supporting Susie's survival into adulthood. Blumer / Blinna appears in 1920 and 1930; the age and household placement suggest the same child, but a later direct record is still needed. John J. appears in Lula's 1920 household. Woodro Wilson / Woodrow appears in 1920, 1930, and 1940, with age variation but consistent placement in Lula's household. Carl McCloud / McLoud was born 30 June 1917 in Brooks County according to his World War II draft card; in 1940 he was in Lula's Morven household, and the draft card names Lula McLoud of Morven as the person who would always know his address.
Ed Stewart was listed in 1900 as William McCloud's cousin, age eighteen. No later matching record has been confidently identified. Allia McLeaud was listed in 1900 as William's sister, age twenty-five. She may be the Adaline McLeod who appeared as a five-year-old daughter in John and Rose McLeod's 1880 household, but that identification is not proven. For now, both should be treated as one-record relationship clues rather than fully developed connection claims.
Connections to Other Barney Families
The 1900 household gives two relationship clues: Ed Stewart as cousin and Allia McLeaud as sister. Both are useful, but neither has enough follow-up evidence to build a broader connection claim. Mattie McCloud's marriage to M. J. / Mayon James Jackson creates a later Jackson connection, documented by the 1916 marriage record, 1920 census, and Mattie's death certificate.
Open Research Questions
- William's exact death date and burial place remain unknown. The current evidence places his death after 1910 and before 1920.
- A Georgia Death Records index entry for William Mcloud names spouse Lulla Hosendolph and child Mattie Jackson, but the available image trail appears tangled with Mattie's death certificate and does not provide a separate death certificate for William.
- Lula's 1959 death is supported by the Georgia death index and cemetery memorial. Her full death certificate, certificate number 29373, would be better.
- The W. Holsondolph / Joe Holsendolph discrepancy for Lula's father is unresolved.
- Julia A. Holsondolph appears later as Julia Miller in Lula's 1940 household, but the intervening marriage or name-change record has not been found.
- Several child identities still need later direct records, especially Burie R., Blumer/Blinna, John J., and Woodrow.
- Ed Stewart and Allia McLeaud should remain notes, not full connection claims, unless later records identify them.
Research Status
Status: Partially documented; needs cleanup and targeted follow-up.
Strengths: The core couple is well supported by the 1895 marriage record, the 1900 and 1910 census records, and Mattie Jackson's 1927 death certificate. Lula's later life is now documented through the 1920, 1930, 1940, and 1950 censuses, the Georgia death index, and cemetery evidence.
Remaining cautions: William's death is still not directly proven. The children's names vary enough that several should be treated as probable rather than fully resolved identities. The earlier claim that Lula disappeared after 1910 is obsolete and should not be repeated.
