Family Narrative
- Wife in 1900: Duck Campbell, age 25, born April 1875 in Georgia
- Children in 1900: Artmissa Campbell, age 8, and Calvin Campbell, age 6
The 1900 Barney census securely establishes Ed Campbell, wife Duck, and children Artmissa and Calvin in Brooks County. The later problem is not whether a second Campbell family existed in the same area. It did. The question is whether that later family belonged to the same Ed Campbell and, if so, whether wife Duck was the same woman later called Phoebe or Phoeby.
The later cluster is strong enough to preserve, but not strong enough to merge into the 1900 household without qualification. In 1910 Barney, Brooks County, an Edd Campbell appears with wife Phoebe and children Ida, Galvin, Lizzie E., Robert, and Anna B. In 1920, still in District 1571, Ed Campbell appears with wife Phoeby and children Robert, Anna B., Bobert Lee, and Lilly Mae, plus granddaughter Lucile. The Ancestry census detail pages for 1900, 1910, and 1920 make the conflict easier to state plainly. The 1900 detail page reports Ed Campbell born in May 1872 in Georgia, with Georgia-born parents, wife Duck born in Georgia, and children Artmissa and Calvin. The 1910 detail page reports Edd Campbell born about 1880 in North Carolina, with North Carolina-born parents, wife Phoebe born in North Carolina, and a different child set. The 1920 detail page keeps Ed and Phoeby in Barney with North Carolina birthplaces and the later child cluster. Those detail pages confirm that the 1910 and 1920 entries describe the same later family, but they also sharpen the conflict with the 1900 household.
Right now the evidence favors two wives rather than one. Duck in 1900 was reported born in April 1875 in Georgia. Phoebe or Phoeby in 1910 and 1920 was reported born about 1877 to 1882 in North Carolina. That is a meaningful conflict in given name, birthplace, and age. Ed's own reported birthplace also shifts from Georgia in 1900 to North Carolina in 1910 and 1920. The safer reading is that Duck was an earlier wife, probably the mother of Artmissa and Calvin, and that Phoebe was a later wife associated with the children in 1910 and 1920. That remains a working interpretation, not final proof.
The case is stronger on what it rules out than on what it closes. No useful Brooks County marriage hit was found on FamilySearch for Ed Campbell and Phoebe in the final targeted pass. Narrow marriage searches produced mostly irrelevant out-of-state results. No direct record was found proving Duck died between 1900 and 1910, and no direct record was found proving Duck and Phoebe were the same woman. No other source documents were located in the last pass beyond the census detail pages themselves. Some FamilySearch searches also became unreliable or intermittent, which limited extraction in the last round.
Connections to Other Barney Families
- The 1910 and 1920 Campbell households in Barney and District 1571 appear to belong to the same later family cluster.
- Calvin in 1900 may connect to Galvin in 1910, but that remains a plausible reading rather than a proved identity.
- The Brooks County setting stays consistent across the records, which keeps the later cluster relevant even though the wife evidence conflicts.
- The census detail pages make the birthplace conflict more explicit: 1900 gives Georgia for Ed and Duck, while 1910 and 1920 give North Carolina for Ed and Phoebe.
Open Research Questions
- Duck Campbell still needs a death, burial, or other direct record between 1900 and 1910.
- Ed Campbell still needs a marriage record to Phoebe or Phoeby if they were different wives.
- Artmissa Campbell needs a later census, marriage, or death record.
- Calvin Campbell and the later Galvin Campbell need a record that proves whether they were the same person.
- Ida, Anna B., Robert, Lizzie E., Bobert Lee, and Lilly Mae all need records naming parents clearly enough to sort the 1900 household from the later one.
- Lucile, listed as a granddaughter in 1920, may help identify one of the older daughters if a later record can be found.
Research Status
Further research needed. Three censuses are documented, and the central issue is now clear: whether the 1900 Duck Campbell household and the later Phoebe Campbell household represent one marriage with inconsistent reporting or two separate marriages. The census detail pages strengthen the conclusion that both household clusters are real, but they do not bridge them. The present evidence supports two probable wives, but the case still needs a direct record to settle the transition.
