Children and Later Trails

This section is reserved for later-life child evidence. No later spouse, death, burial, obituary, probate, separate household, or descendant-line identification has been added here yet from direct records.

Family Narrative

  • Children in household across the census trail: West, Mc, Lila, John or Joseph, Dola, Freddie or Frank, Emma
  • Other later household members: grandchildren Louis, Earnest, and Also Reddick; grandnephew James Gaines

Jake Reddick can be followed with good confidence from 1880 through 1920 in Brooks County. The best reading of the record set is that Jack Reddick in Quitman in 1880, Jake Reddick in Barney in 1900, Jacob Reddick in Barney in 1910, and Jake Reddick again in 1920 are the same man. The name shifts are ordinary, the county remains the same, and the household progression is coherent. He appears throughout as a farmer, and the later censuses report that he could read and write.

Janie Sharp is securely identified as his wife by the Brooks County marriage record dated 1 January 1896. After marriage she appears as Jane or Janie Reddick in the census record. Her 1920 death certificate is an important anchor. It gives her as Janie Reddick, wife of Jacob Reddick, born 30 September 1871 in Lowndes County, daughter of John Sharp and Isabella Longwood, with Jacob Reddick as informant. The same record places her death on 15 December 1920 in the Morven militia district and gives burial at a place written as Delany Cemetery. That burial reference still needs direct confirmation.

The Sharp identification is stronger than it first appeared. In 1880, Jane Sharp, age 7, appears in Grooverville in the household of John Sharp and Isabella Sharp. That is a good fit for the parents later named on Janie's death certificate. It does not finish the Longwood line, but it does give Janie a likely childhood household in Brooks County.

The children can be traced only in part. John in 1900 is very likely the Joseph Reddick found in 1910 and 1920. West in 1900 also lines up well with Westly in 1910, and that line is strengthened by the World War I draft registration for West Reddock filed at Elba, Coffee County, Alabama, on 5 June 1918. In that record he gave his birth as 30 December 1897 at Morven, Georgia, and named Janie Reddock of Barney, Georgia, as his nearest relative. That combination fits this family well and shows that one son had moved into south Alabama by 1918 while still keeping close ties to home. Freddie in 1910 is probably the Frank Reddick still in the household in 1920, but that point is not as firm as the Joseph and West identifications. Mc, Lila, Dola, and Emma remain only partly traced.

The 1920 household also shows the family entering a later stage. Jake and Janie still headed the home, but grandchildren Louis, Earnest, and Also Reddick were present, along with grandnephew James Gaines. That tells us at least one child had already formed a new family by 1920, though the present records do not show which one. Janie's death certificate, filed just after her death, also confirms that Jacob Reddick was still in Brooks County and close enough to serve as informant at the end of that year.

Connections to Other Barney Families

  • The household should be compared with HH#131 Harris Reddick because both were Barney-area Reddick households in 1900, though no direct kinship has been proved.
  • Janie's maiden name connects this household to the Sharp family, and her death certificate points specifically to John Sharp and Isabella Longwood.
  • The 1880 John and Isabella Sharp household in Grooverville is a strong likely early placement for Janie.
  • West Reddick's 1918 draft card shows a south Alabama migration path while preserving a direct tie back to Janie in Barney.
  • James Gaines may later connect this household to another Barney family, but no safe identification has been made yet.

Open Research Questions

  • Jake Reddick still needs a verified death or burial record.
  • Janie's cemetery, written as Delany on the death certificate, needs a clean identification and location check.
  • The Longwood maternal line still needs direct reconstruction.
  • Freddie in 1910 is a plausible match to Frank in 1920, but the link is not yet proved.
  • Mc, Lila, Dola, and Emma still need later records that can be tied to this family without guesswork.

Research Status

Well-researched. The household is anchored by a strong four-step census trail for Jake, a marriage record for Jake and Janie, Janie's 1920 death certificate, a likely 1880 childhood household for Janie, and a 1918 draft card that carries West into adult life. The core family structure is clear even though several children remain only partly identified and Jake's own death record has not yet been found.
