Family Narrative
The 1900 census places Georgian Lashley in Barney, Brooks County, Georgia, as a widowed farmer with three children still at home: John, William, and Annie. The same entry reports that she was born in November 1856 and was the mother of five children, four then living. That count helps frame the household and suggests that one child had died before 1900 or was counted differently in later material.
The broader census chain is now reasonably coherent. In 1860, G. A. Jones appears in Milford, Baker County, Georgia, in the household of L. Jones and M. Jones. In 1870, Georgia Anna Jones appears in Mitchell County in the household of Levi J. Jones and Mary Jones. Taken together, those entries support the identification of Georgian Lashley as a Jones daughter from that family, though the 1860 initials-only entry still calls for caution. A Mitchell County marriage record dated 30 May 1876 then records the marriage of a bride indexed as Georgin James, with alternate readings including Georgianna Jones, to George W. Dashley. The handwriting and index do not line up perfectly, but the record matches the place, date, and couple well enough to use it as the working marriage record for this household, with the name-reading problem left open. By 1880, Georgia Lashley appears in Baker County with husband George Lashley and children Tommie and Ida; Ida was eight months old at enumeration, which fits a birth in late 1879 or early 1880. In 1900, Georgian is a widow in Barney. In 1910, a female entry recorded as "George H. Lashley" appears to be the same woman, still widowed, renting a farm and living with son William H. Lashley; that entry again reports five children born and four living. In 1920, she appears as "George Ann Lashley," mother in the Willie Lashley household. In 1930, she appears as "Georgian S. Lashley," again as mother in the William H. Lashley household. In 1940, she appears in Briggs, Brooks County, as "Mrs W. G. Lashley," age eighty-two, widowed, and identified as mother in the W. H. Lashley household. The 1940 census and the Brooks County death certificate place her at the end of her life in the same community.
Taken as a whole, the record points to a long residence in Brooks County after the move from Mitchell County. The repeated child counts and household ties make the 1910, 1920, and 1930 entries more convincing than they first appeared. The death certificate strengthens several points that had been less secure: it gives her as Georgianna Savannah Jones Lashley, born 7 November 1856 in Mitchell County, names her parents as Levy Jones and Mary Cawley, identifies her as widow of G. W. Lashley, and places her burial at Mt. Zion Camp Ground. It is still a late, informant-based record, so it adds weight rather than closing every question by itself. Some child identifications still need fuller direct-record support.
The evidence is enough to describe Georgian as a widowed Brooks County farm woman whose household can be followed from childhood in the Jones family through old age with son Willie. It is also clear that daughter Annie married into the Morrow household already documented at HH#84. What the record does not justify is treating every later online detail as settled fact.
Connections to Other Barney Families
- Daughter Annie Lashley married J. W. Morrow on 4 February 1910 in Brooks County.
- J. W. Morrow's 1939 death certificate names his parents as John Morrow and Laura Delk, tying Annie's line directly to HH#84 John T. Morrow and Laura Jane Virginia Delk Morrow.
- Find a Grave memorials for both J. W. Morrow and Annie L. Lashley Morrow align with the death and burial data already in hand, and they reinforce Camp Ground Cemetery as the family burial place, but they remain derivative support.
Open Research Questions
- Parentage audit: Keep head-of-household and spouse parentage as unresolved unless a cited direct record names the parents or the entry explains the census chain supporting the identification.
- Child census audit: Continue direct-record tracking for each child named in the 1900 household where later census, marriage, death, burial, obituary, or other parent-link proof is not already cited above.
- The 30 May 1876 Mitchell County marriage record appears to be the couple's marriage record, but the bride and groom name readings should be checked against the best available original image because the index and handwriting are not perfectly clean.
- George Lashley's full identity, death date, burial place, and parentage still need direct-record support, though the marriage record and death certificate both strengthen the reading of his name as G. W. Lashley.
- The full name "Georgianna Savannah Jones Lashley," birth date 7 November 1856, and parent names Levy Jones and Mary Cawley are now supported by the death certificate, but as late informant-supplied details they should still be weighed alongside earlier records.
- Ida Lashley Baker, Tommie Lashley, John Lashley, and Willie Lashley still need cleaner parent-linked tracking across marriage, death, census, or burial records.
- Annie Lashley is now directly tied to J. W. Morrow by the 4 February 1910 Brooks County marriage record and can be followed in Brooks County through the 1910, 1920, 1930, 1940, and 1950 censuses. J. W. Morrow died in Barney on 15 February 1939, and his death certificate names parents John Morrow and Laura Delk. By 1940 Annie appears as widowed head of household in Barney, and by 1950 Annie L. Morrow appears in Barney with brother John W. Lashley in her household. A Georgia death index entry for Annie E. Morrow, who died 26 December 1959 at age 71, is consistent with this line, but the full death certificate is still needed before that final step is treated as settled.
- The 1910 "George H. Lashley" entry now looks very likely to be the same widow from the 1900 household, but the original image should still be checked carefully for every field and adjoining context.
- Any claimed Jones-family links to other Barney Jones households should remain outside the core proof until supported by direct records.
Research Status
Well documented household, though not fully closed. The census chain from childhood through death is strong enough to support Georgian's identification as a Jones woman who became a widowed Lashley in Brooks County, and that reading is reinforced by both the 30 May 1876 Mitchell County marriage record and the 1940 death certificate. Annie's line is also well anchored through her marriage record, five census decades, and her husband's 1939 death certificate. The marriage record still needs careful name-reading, and George Lashley's later identity and death, along with some of the other child identifications, still need firmer direct proof.
