Family Narrative

Frank Golding is securely documented in the 1900 census at Barney, Brooks County, Georgia. That record shows a Black man born in Georgia in April 1859, widowed, literate, renting a house, and working as a cashier. He was living alone, and the census states that his mother was born in Georgia. Within the Barney enumeration, his occupation stands out because most nearby households were tied to manual labor, especially turpentine work.

The earlier census material supports a probable multi-census identification. In 1870, a Frank Golding age eleven appears in District 7, Chatham County, Georgia, in a household with Mary Golding and other Golding family members. In 1880, a Frank Golding age twenty-three appears in District 16, Liberty County, Georgia, listed as a Black single day laborer born in Georgia, with his mother also reported as born in Georgia. Those details fit the later Barney household reasonably well. The age progression is workable, the surname remains consistent, and the Georgia birth pattern aligns across the records.

The earlier draft also cited a possible 1896 Atlanta city census entry for Frank Golden. That reference may be useful, but it should be treated cautiously unless the underlying record is rechecked directly. Even without that 1896 item, the 1870, 1880, and 1900 census records provide a plausible working reconstruction for Frank Golding's adult path from a Chatham County household to an 1880 Liberty County labor record and then to the 1900 Barney household.

Open Research Questions

  • Parentage audit: Keep head-of-household and spouse parentage as unresolved unless a cited direct record names the parents or the entry explains the census chain supporting the identification.
  • The cited 1896 Atlanta record for Frank Golden should be rechecked directly before it is treated as part of the core record chain.
  • No marriage record has been found for Frank Golding.
  • No record has been found identifying the wife implied by his widowed status in 1900.
  • No death, burial, probate, or secure post-1900 record has been found for Frank Golding or Frank Golden.

Research Status

Probable multi-census identification anchored by the 1900 Barney household. The 1870 and 1880 census records fit well enough to support a cautious reconstruction, but the widowhood question and Frank Golding's fate after 1900 remain unresolved. The entry is stronger than a single-record household, though still incomplete.
